Class is so good! [livejournal.com profile] _profiterole_ had already given it the thumbs-up, so I went into it confident that it wouldn't disappoint, and did it ever deliver. So. much. equal. representation.

Kind of gif-heavy (and one gif is probably NSFW).

There's definitely a Buffy-ish vibe since the setting is a high school: Coal Hill Academy, which is well-known to DW fans. In fact, the first ever episode of the show starts there. I haven't seen a lot of Classic Who, but 'The Unearthly Child' is one of my favourite episodes ever. The child in question is Susan Foreman, the Doctor's granddaughter. I missed Susan's name on the roll of honour board in the first episode of 'Class', but I did catch Clara and Danny's names. (Which, by the way, still heartbroken for them both.)

The main cast includes Charlie, an alien prince, and his protector Miss Quill. Instant love for her. SO BADASS. SHE RUNS OVER THE EPISODE 3 MOTW WITH A FREAKING DOUBLE DECKER BUS. The other three main characters are Ram, April, and Tanya. Charlie's boyfriend Mattheusz hasn't been given top billing so far, but they're adorable together and spend a lot of time having sex and cuddling.

I'm a bit too spaced out today to write a proper review, but some things I've loved so far: Miss Quill is actually the leader of the revolutionaries who warred with the royal family (I LOVE the references to the "terrorist or freedom fighter" debate), and as punishment, she has an implant (some sort of creature, I think) in her brain that forces her to protect Charlie while not being able to fire any weapons.

The kids are all traumatised in some way, each suffering from some form of PTSD: Charlie's entire race is dead; April's dad is in jail after attempting to kill his family in a car crash that left her mother paralysed (to say nothing of the fact that her heart has literally been robbed by the very creepy Shadow Kin); Tanya's dad died unexpectedly of a stroke when she was twelve; and Ram's girlfriend was murdered in front of him in the first episode. (He also had one of his legs chopped off by a monster; luckily for him, the Doctor apparently carries spare prosthetic limbs in the TARDIS.)

My main concern right now is that there's going to be overkill in terms of the death and devastation the kids are exposed to every week, but it's definitely being handled with care: the third episode was pretty much all about facing trauma. To quote The Telegraph, "it’s a refreshing change to see the psychological consequences of such events actually play out on screen, rather than being ignored in favour of a more action-packed script that’s not bogged down by trauma."

Have some gifs of some of my favourite moments so far.

Miss Quill!

Playing around while torturing her students with a surprise quiz. :-D

Miss Quill and Matteusz snarking at each other. (She's such a good alien parent figure, no issues at all with her ward's soon-to-be-live-in boyfriend. *g*)

Going to go a bit overboard on Charlie/Matteusz now because pretty much all their scenes are so gif-able.

My dad, he was a folk singer. He played the fiddle. And made people cry with it. Okay, he make me cry. He was always away on tour, so we didn't see him very much, but it was nice when we did. And then it got less nice. He drank. A lot. And then he drank more. When I was eight years old, he purposely drove off the motorway with me and my mum in the car. My mum was in the passenger seat and that's why she's paralysed. I was sitting in the back, but I didn't get hurt. He said it was a suicide attempt, that he wasn't thinking straight, but he still went to prison for it. I got lots of therapy. Loads of it. People were really nice. So nice, but also careful. Like me and my mum were just glass figurines. I'm not made of glass. What he did, it's important, but if it's the thing that rules, then he gets to keep doing that to us every day forever, and I won't have that. I play folk music because I love it. I won't let him take that from me. And that's why I'm so goddamn sensible.

RAM. ♥

And Tanya, my girrrrrl. <333

Yes, I'm so glad people are starting to watch it! \o/ This show deserves all the love.

It's on the horror-ish side of Doctor Who, but I think it manages the same balance: there's enough cuteness and humour that I don't feel like I'm watching something "dark and gritty".

Charlie and Matteusz killed me in episode 3! ♥ And Ms Quill is so beautifully full of sarcasm. <3 I love everybody, really.

I love how ~aware the show is about so many issues. And the humour is so great. I'm loving all the little character moments among all the carnage. \o/

Charlie and Matteusz in episode 3! I'm so delighted we got so much between them. <3 I love everyone too. MISS QUILL ESPECIALLY. ♥

Profiterole mentioned your post and since I'm so deep in Class at the moment, I can't resist the call of someone talking about it... so hi, sorry for crashing your comments ;)

This is one of the (many, many) things I enjoy with that show and something I've always regretting in other shows, how traumatic events never seem to really have consequences. It's never realistic and always makes for poor writing, imho.

I'm so in love with Miss Quill; she's so blasé and cynical and yet so incredibly lonely. She's such an interesting character.

I absolutely love Charlie and can't wait to see more of his story... I've watched the newest trailer the BBC released and it had a Charlie & Matteusz scene that wasn't in the original trailer, which scene made me even more impatient to see next week episode! (And I was already quite excited!)

Tany was awesome in this week episode. The whole thing was wonderful, really, definitely my favourite of the three so far.

Hope the rest of the episodes live up to my expectations :)

Hello, hello! Thank you for coming by. Always great to talk to fellow fans about awesome things. *g*

One of my absolute favourite things about Class so far is that it addresses the various traumas. Totally agree with you about poor/unrealistic writing in shows that ignore what the characters have been through.

Yay for more Charlie and Matteusz in episode 4! I'll have to look up that trailer. *g* I love the whole cast so much. Can't wait for more! :-)

Back in the day, I'm sure LJ would have been filled to the (b)rim with people squeeing about Class and already creating comms and making icons I could have snagged to go with my entries... but now, well, now you often feel a bit isolated so when you find some kindred spirits you can't help but come and say "hi" ;)

It does make for a nice change, doesn't it? To see those characters face their past and try to deal with the consequences as best as they can.

Just in case, I was talking about this trailer. I was like, ohhh tension! Possibly leading to angst! Just my cup of tea ;) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ944218YPA)

I knowww, right? I was just thinking that Class needs a comm, even if just for the principle of it. But yeah, even the DW comm is barely active. We'll have to hunt for some proper icons -- I really want some!

It really does make a great change, especially in the context of DW. Moffat's era has so much stuff that makes me uncomfortable (and not in a good way).

Thanks so much for the link! I read somewhere that there's possibly going to be conflict between the boys as Matteusz struggles to deal with the weirdness that is Charlie's life. And I can't wait to see April in action. I love the way her character seems to be developing.

Haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet, but everyone I know who's watched it has basically called it the best thing to come out of DW in a long while.

That said, it seems to occupy the territory that you usually don't see explored by DW in the main show? It doesn't seem quite dark and gritty, but also is willing to show more and explore more of the subthemes that don't get explored in the main show, a la SJA.

I don't even know where to begin ranting about Moffat's era, haha. Yeah, I totally agree that this is the best thing in the Whovinerse in recent times.

The kids are older than the ones in SJA, but it's definitely not as 'adult' as Torchwood. And there's been quite a bit of blood and gore so far, and we're only on episode 3. I think having the same setting each week is a significant difference from DW? And the school has a long history on the show. Plus I think the Doctor will almost certainly make occasional appearances, as on SJA. I really really like the themes so far. And the fact that queer characters and POC are very much a part of the 'normalised' culture of the show.

I am so glad I know more than one person watching it! My friend basically spammed me with pictures and told me to watch it. I didn't regret it at all. I never watched more than the odd episode of SJA, but loved (early) Torchwood, but I've been falling out of love with DW for a while. This, however might be restoring some faith. I love the range of representation, and the talking about difficult issues. And the sarcasm, which Charlie seems to miss half the time but seems to fuel most of Quill's speech. I love that it's not shying away from the fact they're children, but that children have to deal with hard things (especially if they're at a school with a space-time issue).

I have a lot of love for Charlie and Matteusz, and how they've been represented. That Matteusz himself is comfortable with his sexuality, but it's not welcomed by his parents, and that Charlie asking out a boy is completely normalised to the point they didn't feel the need to show it. And after April's initial 'oh of course he is moment' in which she isn't offended at all, she just slides back into being friendly with him, actually with both of them.

Oh and the different experiences of children with immigrant parents, and reading between the lines I think Tanya's and Matteusz's parents being first generation immigrants and Ram's being second generation and the different dynamics it creates with their children. Mind you, I could be wrong about those impressions.

Just... it makes me happy.

YAY! I'm so glad you love it too! DW sorely needs a new showrunner, IMO, so I hope the series will get better once Moffat leaves.

I love how 'normalised' everything is, too. I'm also curious about how things play out with the immigration aspect (and Charlie and Miss Quill are 'immigrants' too, I suppose) and about the characters' backstories. There's just so much to love about this show. ♥
