I defaulted on the Night On Fic Mountain challenge. Not because the fic wasn’t coming along but because I completely messed up the dates and thought June 21 was the last day to put up the fic, instead of being the day it was revealed. I realised this only a day before the default-cut off, thankfully. I still have a half-finished fic, so I shall try to pull myself together and finish and gift it later. And I don’t think I shall sign up on Rarepair either because I know I always write less during summer.

But I was gifted by delightful little story, and I highly recommend you to read it!

What I’ve done today:

Looked at the pieces of a cross-stitch bag I made 20 years ago, but couldn’t figure out how to sew together. In my effort to finish my sewing UFO’s I have decided to do them by age. After this hiatus I at once spotted a mistake I had done in sewing the shoulder strap together, and when this was unpicked, it is suddenly clear how it should all go together. Duh!

Watered the plants on the balcony and puzzled over a mystery plant in a pot there should only be a rose. I’m very pleased with having a nice balcony, after only seven years. Nils is less pleased.- he is used as having the balcony without humans.

Helped a friend compile a source list over historical corsetry and makeup facts to bust someone who had posted a long faulty article on a FB-group and then claimed it must be true because they found the information on the Net. Le sigh.

Also, worked.

Stephen Furst has passed away, due to complications from diabetes. He was 63.

From his offical Facebook page:

"To truly honor him, do not cry for the loss of Stephen Furst. But rather, enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laugher is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now. [...] And no matter who you are, when you think of Steve, instead of being sad, celebrate his life by watching one of his movies or use one of his bits to make someone else laugh - really, really hard."

We've hit the intersection of social justice, healthcare, politics, and reproductive rights: the moral imperative to stop the Senate from passing the travesty known as Trumpcare.

The Indivisible Guide has your back: It's Time to Stop TrumpCare and We've Got a Plan. The Senate is trying to do what the House of Representatives did in May: jam through its TrumpCare bill in secrecy, without public hearings, without a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score, and without knowing its full impact on American families. That’s why the time to put on the pressure is now. We’ve put together new resources and an action plan to help.

This kind of activism takes time and commitment but not much physical stamina: it's perfect for those of us who can no longer march in the streets.

This year, I'm thinking of something similar to a Harlequin Desire or Harlequin Presents summary. Leaning towards a Harlequin Desire where the plot was originally "billionaire impregnates hotel employee," but that could change, because I think way too much about how fpreg can possibly work and about Me's feelings towards losing her children in canon. The pairing will either be Clara/Me or Missy/River. Although I don't know about a possible Missy/River child. Different, yes, but I don't know if it's my kind of thing or not.

Done! This has been so much fun! And I have a new shiny playlist on Spotify with all the music you have shared!

Day Thirty: A Song That Reminds You of Yourself

Well, there has been a number over the years…

And I couldn’t find this song on Youtube, but you can listen to it on Spotify:
Eva Dahlgren’s Mitt Liv (“My Life”)

I’ll bore you with the translated lyrics here, but I love the melody too.

In a backbeat my thoughts are dancing/On all too slippery floors/Neither laziness nor knowledge/Can steer them

My life/Once upon a time/My life

A motley collection of people/Lives in my mind/Fight for me rebel/Let yourself conquer me

My life/Once upon a time/My life

On fields of dandelions and thorns/A girl is dancing a strange waltz/Round and round and round in circles/But always on her way towards a goal

My life/Once upon a time/My life

Only my life

So cold this morning. For values of cold in Australia, which is to say there's frost on the grass and I have my giant scarf on. I am having crappy, crappy low moods but weirdly and ferociously creative times. It is strange and I don't understand the rhythms of it at all. I feel like the world is being sucked into a black hole, and yet I cannot stop writing POI fic.

Five things about winter Saturdays in rural Australia:
- Frosty, foggy mornings that will become clear and sunny by twelve
- The footy scoreboard shining orange through the fog as the under-twelves play the 8am match
- Teenage girls in netball skirts with goosepimpled legs, poor things
- People leaving their shoes at the front door so they don't track mud through the pharmacy
- Farmers all hollow-eyed from helping calves into the world, eating hot pies for breakfast

I want to say some things about media I've been enjoying but I keep procrastinating because I don't have the time to write long and involved things. So, here are some short thinkings on things:

Five things about Wonder Woman
Not very spoilery but I wouldn't want to ruin anyone's joy )

Five things about Legion
Not too spoilery. Defs not addressing the big spoilers, anyway. )

Five things about Twin Peaks
I have seen episode five, so assume spoilers for up to there )

Five Things to Do
- Via [personal profile] leecetheartist, a zooniverse project based in Western Australia: Western Shield Camera Watch. Their description: Western Shield is a government funded conservation project that is dedicated to managing introduced predators, primarily foxes and cats, that threaten native wildlife in Western Australia.
This is a very gentle and calming kind of thing to do, I enjoy it a lot. You get to identify kangaroos and emus and all sorts of weird little hopping things. You could also identify this murderous looking bird:

[A giant, yellow eyed bird, going at the lens of a camera with an angry beak]

- [personal profile] anandrine is talking about communities on Dreamwidth: active comms, comms you'd like to see become more active. let's talk communities

- read this Beatles zombie AU webcomic: Eleanor Rigby
(when i was very small i assumed this song was about some lady who literally kept a human face in a jar by the door and since father mckenzie buried her that meant that he also killed her and basically i thought eleanor rigby was about zombies until i was like 12 years old)

- Check out this new prompt comm, [community profile] picture_prompt_fun, write a story for a picture prompt.

- sign-up for [community profile] multifandomdrabble, and write someone 100 words. I did this last year, when it was being trialled at Imzy, and it was fun! More details here.

Five Linkspams to make your day a little better
- This woman's joyful reaction at a woman proposing to her girlfriend at a museum: No One Can Get Over This Older Lady's Reaction To A Woman Proposing To Her Girlfriend (This gave me life at a time when I was feeling very bitter at yet another friend's marriage where they did not do anything about the hateful 'Man and woman' clause of the marriage act that must be read out at a wedding in Australia. Like this: Objectors block out Marriage Act's 'union of man and woman' words at civil weddings.)

- The Grenfell Tower fire is a horrible, terrifying tragedy. I am buoyed by the stories of how people have helped, how emergency workers have been amazing. (Like Mr Rogers: "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.) Today in my email, I saw this about pharmacists dealing with the logistics of people losing all their medication and prescriptions and records: Pharmacists in West London have been working to help people affected by the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

- Remember Tommy Westphall and the snowglobe phenomenon? Check in with it again here: The Tommy Westphall Universe. Apparently reboots have really kicked the database into overdrive this year. I saw a pack of Morley cigarettes on Twin Peaks, which means the Twin Peaks verse doesn't exist. No surprises there, though.

- Knitting spies!! The Wartime Spies Who Used Knitting as an Espionage Tool

- From some of my Person of Interest research: The 10 Best Bottles of Vodka in the World. Linked because the tasting notes are even more amazing and wanky than wine tasting notes. For example: Soft and laser-precise on the palate with a seamless balance and great length of flavor.

Now I want vodka. But it is illegal for me to drink vodka and be a health professional. So cruel.

Son of ETA: As people have asked, yes, I am legally forbidden to drink vodka only while I am at work being a health professional. After work, I may freely engage in the drinking of vodka, and indeed, many other spirits.

I crawled out through the hotel window,
and lay slaughtered on the roof, thinking:

Nothing is beautiful here: even the thousand
suns struggle to provoke a light of healing
rather than scorching. I felt the gold cut
through me and cauterise the wound. half-
finished and aching, I was a dangerous thing
—an injured animal still hunting. Birds
flinched from my hands and flowers
withered into kindling. My own blood
refused to run through my fingers. I was
incessant, perpetual—running barefoot
through the woods towards the creaking
heart of my body. Only rain came out to
greet me as it struck the undergrowth
with an open palm. I ran like a bush fire
was chasing. Salt settled into the ground
behind me, and the pulse of the earth
stuttered and was slowing.

Day Twenty-Nine: A Song From Your Childhood

This is really difficult, as music was a very important part of my childhood, but in many ways this song picks up several of the musical things I loved as a child. First, it was written for a comedy called The Apple-War from 1971. It was written, directed and acted by one of Sweden’s most popular comedy duo’s; Hasse Alfredson and Tage Danielsson, who, combined and apart made a lot of music, books, movies and shows I loved as a child- and still love. The Apple-War took a firm stand against globalization and pollution before it became a trend, and it was very much part of my childhood.

It’s a bit of an odd movie, really, the plot a mix of the aforementioned criticism and fairy tale. The idyllic village Änglamark (Angel’s Ground) are being threatened by a multinational industry which will destroy the beautiful nature. The grocer’s errand boy becomes a somewhat unlikely hero when he seeks the help of the family Lindberg. They are all supernatural in some way; witches, giants or elves, and are recognized by a mole on their cheek. In the end the errand boy has both slayed the dragon , defeated the multinational company and also won the love of the prettiest witch.

Throughout the movie, the songs of Vert Taube was used. He was a Swedish songwriter, whose lyrics often had a strong nautical theme, but also wrote a lot of beautiful songs about the Swedish summers and it's beautiful nature. He was very old when this movie was made, but he wrote a song especially for it; this song I share here. I was also performed by his son Sven-Bertil, who made a lot of records my father, and by default also I, listened to in the seventies.

Also, the pretty witch was played by Monica Zetterlund, who probably is my favourite Swedish singer of all time.

Call it Angel’s Ground, or Heaven on Earth/If you want/The soil we inherited and the beautiful groves/Wild roses, pennyworth, linden flowers and chamomile/Let them live/They are so wonderful

Let the children dance like angels around maple and elm/lay hide-and-seek among flowering branches/Let birds live and sing their hymns for us/Let fishes swim among bridges and stone/Stop the slaughter of the animals in the forests´/Let the eagles fly and deers run free/Let the last river roar in our terrain/Continue to roar among fells, spruce and pine

I am actually feeling fannish about Timeless, in that giddy, why isn't everyone feeling this way about my show kind of way. I can't stop thinking about the series. I'm actually reading fic. I'M SUBSCRIBED TO TWO WIPS at AO3. It's hasn't been that long but I'd almost forgotten what it's like, to be this in love with a show. It's kind of wonderful, isn't it?

In other fannish news, The Expanse, season one, disc three, is "in transit," meaning someone in the LAPL system has finally gotten off their ass and sent my request. I've been number one in the queue for weeks. They're all checked out now but when I put it on hold, there were copies on the shelf. I called twice to complain and talked to one of the librarians in person, too. They all claimed that they had no idea what was going on, let alone why I kept getting bypassed. Maybe the last in-person visit actually worked.

There isn't much fic and what there is, isn't exactly my kind of thing. I wasn't going to do it until the TV series ended (spoiler! hatred) but I've decided to go ahead and read Leviathan Wakes, the first book in the Expanse series. My husband has read book one. He thought that since the show runners weren't following the book that closely, spoilers wouldn't much matter. He also thinks the TV series is much better written.
