Title: Freely Given
Fandom: Versailles
Rating: Explicit
Genre: PWP, missing scene
Word Count: 1017 (Oneshot)
Characters/pairing: Fabien Marchal/Sophie de Clermont.
Warnings: BDSM, spanking
Summary:I liked everything you did to me. Everything. Even when you hurt me.
AN: This fic takes place immediately after A Bewildered Heart. It is, in fact, a direct continuation of the last scene in it. At the time I wasn’t in the mood to write smut, so I decided to finish the fic, and make this into a missing scene-fic instead. It seems what I needed to prompt me to get into the smut, was to pause from writing angst…

If you haven’t read the previous fic, this works very well to read as a PWP. The first bit is lifted directly from the end of A Bewildered Heart.

Wednesday Book Meme

Because of all of the kids' books and quickie romances I've been reading lately, I am nine books ahead on my Goodreads challenge. I'm going to have to up the ante by ten books, at least, to compensate.

What I've finished

All the President's Men (1974), Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. I began reading it because of (1.) this article in Newsweek: "The Eerie Similarities Between Alleged Trump Scandals and All The President's Men, and (2.) because we'd just watched the movie based on it. (Note that the Newsweek story was published back in March. Imagine if they'd written it this week.) The book is award-winning journalism but honestly, the movie makes for a better story. Go rent the movie. Download it. Whatever. (We checked it out of the library). You will not be sorry. The movie gets five stars. The book gets four stars. These reporters, their editors, and their publisher are all American heroes.

Beany and the Beckoning Road (1959), Lenore Mattingly Weber. Beany believes that she has lost boyfriend Norbett to another girl: Cynthia. She and Johnny plan to drive from Denver to California to return their nephew to his parents and advertise for passengers to share the travel expenses. What a surprise for Beany when she discovers that one of the passengers is Cynthia. What will happen to a mismatched set of passengers with very little money and a tomato plant in the back seat?

This was better than the previous book in the series. Beany flies off the handle one time too many for my taste but whatever. Three stars for retro-charm and that tomato plant. I haven't decided if I'm going to continue on with the Malone family, but this book was funny and engaging.

Girl in the Water (2016), Dana Marton. I took a chance and purchased (I know!) this book because of how much I liked Secret Soldier. The online reviews were enthusiastic, but I was not impressed. Marton tried to weave together three stories, and multiple points of view, and couldn't quite pull it off. spoilers ) I applaud her attempt to write something more ambitious than your run of the mill romance but this didn't work for me at all. I give it one star.

I returned Sugar and Other Stories (1987) by A.S. Byatt to the library after reading just one story. Actually, I didn't make it through the first story. I can't recall the title. It was about an unpleasant little girl, attending an atrocious boarding school, with nasty classmates and an appalling, sadistic headmistress, who I've decided in retrospect might be a stand-in for the writer. Byatt enjoys torturing her characters in much the same way that her headmistress character enjoyed torturing her students. Halfway through, I found I wasn't liking anything about this story. Enough was enough. I skimmed through the next two stories and they were more of the same. No, thank you.

What's next?

I borrowed another book in the time travel porn series from the LAPL. I think this one is called "The Slayer" but it has nothing to do with vampires.

I'm still rereading the series for my kidlit fic exchange, titles withheld.

I unearthed an old novel of Margaret Drabble's which I'd never read, The Peppered Moth.

I'm carrying around Mirror Dance from the Vorkosigan saga in my purse.

There's a stack of time travel novels from the library at my bedside.

Entering Space: Creating a Space-faring Civilization by Robert Zubrin is sitting around somewhere, too. I got it out of mothballs because there is a chapter on mining asteroids, which is relevant to my interests. Speaking of space-faring civilizations, season two of The Expanse arrived yesterday!

Warnings: Some swearing. Mild violence.
Author's Notes: Prompt: ‘Outsider POV where a teen girl's brother is possessed by an angel and he suddenly starts spouting all kinds of divine wisdom ... and he is suddenly incredibly powerful. Maybe she's a popular girl and he embarrasses her more than ever now, maybe she got bullied and that's no longer a problem thanks to him, or any other situation you come up with.’ Writing an outsider POV was a challenge, but it was a lot of fun to do. Just to let you know, Sam and Dean don’t turn up straight away in this, but you will see plenty of them.
Summary: He’s been wearing the same suit for four days straight.

[personal profile] sallymn asked: Is there a character in any of your fandoms do you think was criminally underused?

I’m not sure I would use the word criminally, but I certainly feel character’s are underused at times. The one that springs to mind right now is Dracula in The Historian. Given how important he is to the main characters in the book, and how much he dominates the events, his actual screen time is extremely limited. The most we see of him is in a document which recounts a meeting with him, and then he has one brief scene at the end, which ends very abruptly. I’m sure the author had a vision to why we see so little of him, but for me it doesn’t work. It makes him very distant, and less scary.

[profile] earthspirit asked; Favorite character from Penny Dreadful?

I’m not at all original, as it’s Vanessa Ives. Eva Green is amazing, though in truth I think the casting is pretty amazing over all. But Vanessa is such an interesting character. The anti-hero is rarer than the hero, but an anti-heroine is even rarer.

[personal profile] gryffindoridiot asked: What is your favorite book to film adaptation?

Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. It’s my favourite Jane Austen, and the version is better than any other adaptations of it, IMO. There are a few scenes in the book that doesn’t make it to the screen, but apart from that, i think it's perfect. I love the casting, the settings and the clothes. The photo is beautiful! For some reason I find watching it incredibly restful, so this is a movie I often rewatch when I am feeling stressed out and frazzled.

I’m in a good place writing wise right now. Which, in part, has to do with feeling a little fragile. I’ve always found writing good for the soul. And I’m stretching myself a bit, which is nice. I wrote that little ghost story which is the first piece of original fiction I’ve written in years. And I started a new versailles-fic. I never intended to write a series, but somehow it became one. And it’s interesting to write a love-story, because it’s something I only did for the first time last year. And it’s also interesting to try to make a relationship which is extremely unequal to begin with into something which isn’t, without losing the characters. It’s also great fun in writing a female protagonist with her own sexual agenda, because that is something I find rather lacking in fanfic. Especially in a BDSM context. And from a purely selfish standpoint it’s really nice to write something people actually comments on. Which, when I think about it, probably has more to do of me for once writing in both a semi-popular fandom, and a popular pairing. Or rather, a pairing a lot of people say they love, but basically only I write. So the fics would probably get attention no matter what.

I plan to sign up to The Darkest Night, but it’s a while yet- nominations are open to July 23. Remix Me seems to have withered and died, but there is a new Remix challenge rising; Remix Revival. I’ve already signed up, and there is plenty of time to mull it over if you are uncertain, as sign-ups close on July 30.

Doctor Who!

So the new Doctor is female! I am so delighted. I honestly suspected they would tease us with this all season and then chicken out when it came to it. But they've gone ahead. Assuming we stick with the female Master, too, then the m/m ship that my teenaged self grew up with is suddenly a queer women ship, and that is very exciting!

So what I'm hoping is that the new showrunner will also not be useless, and I can fall back into this fandom.

It's kinda weird because this the first time that they're announcing a new Doctor and I'm actually interested about who's cast instead of being paralysed with not caring. Tennant was announced before I'd even seen the show, Smith was announced when I had been stuck somewhere around mid season 2 for almost three years, and Capaldi was announced when I had quit watching the show again because of the boringness of Eleven/Clara era.

(this is also the first time I'm actually sad to see the current Doctor go, instead of thinking "Maybe I'll like the next one better")

Also, if in 2013 my reaction was "Was it a woman? No? Okay then. " now it's "Please be a woman, please be a woman, please be a woman"

I'm not saying that I'll automatically like the next Doctor if it's a woman, but the odds are much better considering that Doctor Who is the only current show with a male lead that I even watch anymore. But storywise as well, I think it would be quite an anticlimax if Twelve went through all the trouble of fighting the regeneration only to end up looking like Kris Marshall. What a tragic ending that would be.

(For the record, I really liked Kris Marshal in My Life in Film and My Family, but I just think he'd be such a boring choice for the Doctor)

eta: And it's Jodie Whitaker. I kinda suspected it might be her ever since I heard that she'd suddenly risen in the betting lists this week - the same happened with Capaldi as well. Not my first choice, but I approve. Now, hopefully the new Doctor's personalilty will be more like Nine or Twelve than Ten or Eleven to avoid making the Doctor into a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl. And please let her have clothes that you could actually fight daleks in.

[personal profile] liadtbunny is reading The Hobbit and suddenly I remember a poster I had as a child. As you can see you get bits from the whole book, with the added bonus of a Black Rider, and, I assume, Goldberry.

I love hans Arnold’s illustration which range from sweet to creepy to scary, but always interesting to look at. I think I have shared some of his works earlier, but he is worth another post.

Some naked breasts under the cut.
