The Fall

Still on episode 3 but had to pause and appreciate this:

Let’s not refer to them [the killer's victims] as innocent. […] What if he kills a prostitute, next? Or a woman walking home drunk, late at night, in a short skirt? Will they be, in some way, less innocent, therefore less deserving? Culpable? The media loves to divide women into virgins and vamps. Angels or whores. Let’s not encourage them.

Also this:

"Man fucks woman." Subject: man. Verb: fucks. Object: woman. That’s OK. "Woman fucks man." Woman: subject. Man: object. That’s not so comfortable for you, is it?

In conclusion: Stella Gibson. ♥

P.S. I forgot John Lynch was Balinor, and had to IMDb him to figure out where I'd seen him before. *facepalm*

I've been meaning to start on this! Is it enjoyable? I was worried it would turn all misogynistic and make me want to punt things through a screen, as so many televised mysteries (okay and books too, don't let me get started on how crime fiction has a SUPERNOVA of a problem with sex workers) so often do.

It's definitely very watchable - I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I was actually thinking about the question of misogyny while watching it. I often wonder if the portrayal of violence against women is itself misogynistic, regardless of whether the text condemns the crime. Not that the show ever downplays the horror of what the killer does, but you're still left with all these terrible images.

Having said that, one of the things that make me uncomfortable about the genre of crime fiction in general is that the focus is almost always on solving the crime, and sometimes on how much the detective relishes the process, with very little regard for the victim. That's definitely not the case here; the families' grief, and the way Stella and her colleagues react to having to examine the crime scenes and the victims' bodies, is something I appreciated.

I really don't want to start a new show but I saw that and died with love.

Right? And it's queer-friendly too. :-) I didn't want to start a new show either, but once I saw the first part, I was totally hooked.

God yes. This sounds like a good show.

I started watching it for the very predictable reason that I wanted more Gillian Anderson on my screen, and was pleasantly surprised to find these added elements of awesomeness. Also, it's lovely the way she connects with other women.

This sounds like a show that I must watch! Especially if it stars Gillian Anderson.

GA is a good enough reason to watch anything, IMO. :-)

Awww yay you're watching it! I had a rewatch just a few weekends ago. <3

[identity profile] lyryk.livejournal.com 2014-06-03 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I need to rewatch it ASAP too. :-) Gillian is fabulous, and I can't wait to see what Colin does!

SAME! I'm so excited for his part :D In general, for the whole new season.

Wonder if he's the new Jimmy Olson. If they get together on screen I may spontaneously combust. Or, you know, I wouldn't mind him being a sweet little protégé. Or a sweet little serial killer, for that matter.

OMG leetle Merlin is going to be in it?

Predictably, Bohemia was sold.

:-D :-D :-D

I just finished watching this series yesterday. Those are definitely some great quotes. She's a pretty great character.

She's amazing. <3 I'm amused that both Merlin and his dad will be on the show. *g*

[identity profile] geekslave.livejournal.com 2014-06-04 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't even think about the fact they'll be on the show at the same time. That's cool.

And poor Freya was on the show. She didn't make it out alive either time.

I knew Sarah was going to die because I accidentally read spoilers, but I was rooting for her so much. :-(

[identity profile] geekslave.livejournal.com 2014-06-05 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't read spoilers, but I think I'd seen the trailer and I knew that her character was the main target, but when I saw the first episode and saw that she was a regular and pretty high up in the credits, I thought she'd make it past more than one episode. Even after she died, I thought she might appear as a guest, until I saw her name removed from the credits.

OHHH I want to see this!

And the whole rhetoric of 'innocent victims' has been irking me for YEARS.

[identity profile] lyryk.livejournal.com 2014-06-04 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? As though the nature of violence is somehow determined by who the victim is.
