100 Female Characters: #1: Charlie Bradbury

So, I decided to do the 100 Things Challenge! If you don't already know, the objective is to pick a topic and make a hundred posts about it. There is no deadline so I'm probably going to be posting about this for the rest of my life so don't worry, I'm not going to be spamming you, and I'll put most stuff under a cut so those who aren't interested don't have to subject themselves to my fangirliness.

I've decided to post about 100 Female Characters I Love, mostly queer/chromatic characters from shows/films/books. I might do ficlets for some of them, but mostly I'll just post pics/general squee.

So here is Character #1: the very, very adorable Charlie Bradbury from Supernatural. Spoilery for episode 7.20, obvs.


Oh, Charlie. I am, obviously, biased in Felicia Day's favour; I was ~hugely looking forward to this episode and it didn't disappoint in the least. Much as I adore Sam and Dean, it was lovely to (for ONCE!) have a central female character who

(a) did not flirt with/sleep with/torture/kill Sam and/or Dean
(b) was not Evil Incarnate (not that I don't love the bad girls *g*)
(c) did not die horribly.

Her Arwen desktop! ♥ ♥ (I would've picked Galadriel or Eowyn, but anyway.) Her abiding love for Hermione! Her shipping Hermione/Lunasome undisclosed female character! Her general geekiness! Her dancing in the lift! Her being un-clone-able! Her kickassness and badassery! (Okay, so Sam gave her the What Would Hermione Do talk, but imo that wasn't patronising.) AND THE END. ALL THE HEARTS. Have some Charlie.

She was great! I had slight moments of uneasiness and backflashes, but I was able to keep them down mostly. And Charlie was awesome! I liked how the guys took a back seat and let her occupy centre stage.

Also. Probably with a different song, but dancing in the elevator, glass or other? Definitely done that. I felt profoundly understood.

Yay, glad you liked the episode! I haven't had time to rewatch it yet but I keep replaying the dancing in the lift. So. Adorable.

Yeah, I had fun. And really, with most of the meta-themed episodes I had seen in the past, the ones which played strongly on fan culture, I just found myself cringing and hiding, and I didn't have that here; she was a nice, well-written character.

And dancing in the lift! Luckily, the ones here are not made of glass.

Oh, I loved those episodes! Ever since Borges and Barth and Michael Ende I've had an abiding love for metafiction. And I loved the 'Sam-slash-Dean' and 'Dude, do they know we're brothers?!' conversation.

Oh, I love metafiction, definitely, I just somehow couldn't deal with it on that show. Or maybe I should clarify: the whole ComicCon-moments, the crazy fangirls, that just made me recoil. But I enjoyed the one when they become their own actors, and those conversations were fun, too, you're right.

I think it's also bcs of the whole heartbreaker-complication, knowing that she would be over the moon for those fandom-acknowledgement-references. It's a bit hard to separate sometimes. For example, I'm quite sure she's convinced she's basically Charlie.

*flails* I LOVED this episode, and Charlie too! <333 ...I really wonder what the chances are that they'll bring her back at one point. I mean, she's awesome, I'm sure the fans LOVED her, and she's not dead! Anything is possible, right?! *crosses fingers* ♥

I hope she comes back! But they killed Amber Benson's character when they brought her back, so I'm in two minds about whether I want to see her back or not.

She was WONDERFUL, wasn't she? I'm really looking forward to watching the episode again to just bask in her being great and without fear of her dying. And that .gif of her dancing in the lift makes me so happy EVERY TIME I see it :)
