Right? I'm seething at that freaking angel. How dare he keep Dean from going after Sam. I mean, it was obvious that Sam wouldn't/didn't survive, and yeah, they had to get out of those tunnels and go find Mary and Jack, but still. You do not get between Sam&Dean's love for each other. I did love that Dean was haunted by the image of Sam getting bit and then being dragged away, and that the first thing he wanted to do after they found Mary and Jack was go back for Sam's body. But Castiel really pissed me off. Not just by holding Dean back, but also by implying that they'd all let Lucifer out of the cage when he was the one who did that, all on his own. And also by daring to compare what Lucifer did to him to what Sam suffered at Lucifer's hand.
Yeah, everything you said. Jensen did a great job of showing us Dean's grief, but I'm appalled at the way Dean's being written. And what pisses me off so much is that it could easily have been fixed by having Dean insisting on going after Sam and letting Gabriel and Castiel go find Mary and Jack. What was the tearing hurry anyway, since they believed the rift would remain open? And what's with the angels, anyway? If Lucifer could bring Sam back, why couldn't Gabriel, since he's also an archangel? Freaking angels, man.
Yeah, Dean's characterization this season has been more than a little appalling. But I'm not sure if it was that out of character for Dean to leave Sam behind--it *was* obvious that Sam was dead, and Dean left his body behind before to save civilians, in Red Meat. He also planned on going back for Sam's body in that episode. Castiel's the one who really enraged me.
Gabriel couldn't bring Sam back because he's out of juice. It's why he didn't have enough grace to maintain an open portal for long.
I just wish that Dean had at least made sure Sam was dead. Castiel has been enraging me since S6. I try to ignore the fact that he's still around and apparently forgiven for all the crap he's pulled, but episodes such as this one make it difficult to pretend he's not still there, fucking everything up as usual. Ugh ugh ugh.
Yeah, I get that he couldn't do it at the time, but Lucifer conveniently got more juice when he needed it. The angels are always conveniently impotent when it suits some stupid plot point.
The angels *are* a stupid plot point. I really wish we could get rid of them all. And yeah, I wanted Dean to go check on Sam for himself, but I kind of get why he didn't, even if I'm not happy about it.
I think they do know it, and god I hope Cas gets called to the carpet over it. How could they NOT know?
But also ... it's weird. I feel like the writers have been paying too much attention to what some of the fandom rhetoric is, and tiptoeing through AO3 to see what's trending, then using that stuff to pad episodes. And they don't have a good understanding of fandom, to be honest. So this is what we get.
How could they not know, indeed! It was deeply emotional for sure, so maybe they don't quite have a handle on ~how to tell a good story in a way that reinforces rather than undermines the character dynamics. I am SO here for Dean being devastated by hurt/dying Sam, but just a few minor tweaks in the script would have made it so much more satisfying (and believable).
